Philadelphia International Records and Sigma Sound Studio Building to be Demolished Saturday Morning

The building that housed the historic Philadelphia International Records and Sigma Sound Studios will meet its fate on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. as the wrecking ball makes way for a planned 47-story hotel and luxury apartment building. The building was owned by famed "Philadelphia Sound" music producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. It was sold to Dranoff Properties last year. The offices were damaged by fire in 2010.

Artists that have recorded there include Patti LaBelle, The Delphonics, The O'Jays, Hall & Oates, David Bowie, Teddy Pendergrass, The Soul Survivors, Billy Paul, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Spinners, The Intruders, Michael Jackson, MFSB, Lou Rawls, etc. The developers plan to place gold bricks outside the new building at Broad and Spruce to pay homage to the legacy of the studios.

There has been an online petition started in the past two weeks asking that the studio be saved and turned into a museum, but it seems there is no more time. Saturday also happens to be Record Store Day around the world, a day that recorded music will be celebrated in independent records stores around the area, but the day will be bittersweet on Broad Street as we see the creation point for a prolific (if not quintessential) era in Philadelphia music crumble to the ground.
