Christie Proposes Social Security Overhaul; Teacher Fall Settlement; PA Speed Camera Consideration

New Jersey governor Chris Christie has proposed a $1 trillion overhaul of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. The governor called for reduced Social Security benefits for seniors earning more than $80,000, and ending payments entirely for those making $200,000 or more, as well as an increase in the retirement age from 67 to 69.

A former high school administrator was awarded a $5 million settlement for severe injuries she sustained when she slipped on wet flooring glue at her North Philadelphia school. Maria Mangano sustained nerve damage leaving her unable to work, must use a cane and has a rare skin affliction that makes it hypersensitive to any movement. She now requires 24 hour care.

Speed-enforcement cameras and alcohol-triggered ignition locks are getting serious consideration in the Pennsylvania legislature. Legislators are considering legalizing cameras in highway work zones like those in Maryland to automatically ticket drivers who exceed speed limits. To get tougher on drunk driving there are proposals to require ignition interlock systems for first-time DUI offenders.
