Hurricane Irene Invades Philadelphia Region; Share your Pics and Stories

As Hurricane Irene begins to make it's way into the Philadelphia and South Jersey region, it is slightly weakened but still packs a powerful punch. Mayor Michael Nutter has declared a State of Emergency in the City of Philadelphia and cautions all those in flood prone areas to seek alternate shelter as soon as possible. Businesses and events in the city tonight are closed/canceled, as the rain and wind will intensify overnight.

Emergencies have also been declared in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. DE has also banned non-emergency travel.

Flooding will be the main problem as 6-8 inches of rain is expected to fall on our already soaked region. Combined with the high winds, trees can easy topple from loosened rain soaked soil. Power outages are expected. Please stay off the roads and at home unless it is an absolute emergency, first for your own safety and second so that official personnel can perform their jobs. Flood Warnings are in effect for the entire area. Smaller creeks and streams will flood first, with larger rivers such as the Schuykill cresting late Sunday after the storm has past.

As with all hurricanes, rain and wind comes in bands. These bands can carry embedded thunderstorms with lightning and possibly tornados. It is not safe to be outside during this storm just to experience the high winds or heavy rain, it is possible to get struck like any other summer storm.

As the storm progresses we want to hear your stories and see your pictures. Share them right here. Comment and add below or send them to pics AT iradiophilly.com
