Terror Threat in US Malls; Gun Shop Suspect in Custody; Dune Debate in South Jersey

A video purported to be from Somalia's al-Qaida-linked rebel group al-Shabab urged Muslims to attack shopping malls in the U.S., Canada, Britain and other Western countries. The threat came in an hourlong video released Saturday. The masked narrator concluded by calling on Muslims to attack shopping malls, specifically naming the Mall of America in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington, as well as the West Edmonton Mall in Canada and the Westfield mall in Stratford, England.

Police took a suspect into custody after a standoff at a gun shop in Tulleytown. Police surrounded Mike’s Gun Shop in Levittown where they cornered burglars who broke into a gun shop. The standoff began about 3 a.m. and residents near the shopping center on Levittown Parkway in Tullytown Borough have been advised to shelter in place. The Pennsbury School District and St. Michael the Archangel School also had delayed openings because of the police activity.

Down the shore, residents of Cape May, Longport and Wildwood Crest are resisting a $74 million dune and beach replenishment project. The proposal for dunes 20 feet high, would affect the views from many homes. Further north, Harvey Cedars mayor Jonathan Oldham suggests, “Do the project!” Harvey Cedars was saved by their dunes during Hurricane Sandy. Without the dunes, Oldham says his town would have looked just like the unprotected Mantoloking where every house was damaged or washed out to sea.
