Meat Packing Stabbing Started As Prank; Man Attacks Wawa Clerk Over Order; NJ Fisherman Shoots Whale

Yesterday's fatal stabbing at a meat processing plant in Montgomery County apparently started as a relatively harmless prank earlier this week. On Tuesday, the victim, 25-year-old Danny Vazquez, tried to pull a chair out from under the suspect, 32-year-old Peter Jok Atem. After the prank, Atem told Vazquez, “I’m going to get you for that.” Yesterday, a witness saw Atem and Vazquez in a physical altercation at the MOPAC Rendering Plant in Franconia Township. The two separated, but a short time later the witness saw Atem stabbing Vazquez. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. Police found Atem hiding in a shed with apparent self-inflicted slash and stab wounds and a note that read in part, "see you in hell. life for life." He was also taken to the hospital and treated. Autopsy results show that Vaquez died of multiple stab wounds. Atem has been charged with first degree murder and remains in police custody at Paoli Hospital.

A man upset about his sandwich order is under arrest in Delaware after attacking a Wawa employee. 36-year-old Terron Reed of Bear, DE, went to the Wawa at 140 Beaverbrook Plaza in New Castle, DE at 2:30 a.m. Thursday and ordered a sandwich at the deli area. The 23-year-old woman behind the counter told Reed that his order couldn't be made the way he requested and that's when he snapped. Reed threw a display stand at the woman before going behind the counter and choking her and finally throwing her to the ground. He left the store threatening to shoot other employees and drove off. Troopers were able to catch up to him and pull him over on Route 13. The woman clerk wasn't injured. Reed has been charged with strangulation, disorderly conduct, making terroristic threats, DUI and other offenses. He posted $5,500 unsecured bail.

A Cape May, NJ, fisherman accused of shooting at and killing at least one pilot whale has turned himself in to U.S Marshals on Thursday. 27-year-old Daniel Archibald faces a violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act that makes it illegal to hunt, kill, capture or harass any marine mammal. A 11-foot pilot whale washed ashore in Allenhurst, Monmouth County, in September 2011. A necropsy discovered a .30 caliber bullet in the whale's jaw causing the animal to die slowly while starving. Archibald worked on a tuna fishing boat named “Capt. Bob” which was in New Jersey waters during the time the whale would have been shot and complained on Facebook about the whales' nuisance. Archibald has admitted to shooting at whales to chase them away. Agents searched the boat and found a World War II-era Mosin-Nagant rifle that they linked to the bullet found in the whale. He could face a year in prison and a $100,000 fine if found guilty.

Tonight,
Partly Cloudy, breezy, temperatures in the mid teens this evening going to record lows near 0 overnight in Center City.
