Cameras on Bar Exteriors Proposed; Cops Okay Stopping Shovelers; $35 M Offer to Schools

Philadelphia City Councilman, Curtis Jones Jr. will propose that every business that serves alcohol be required to install exterior cameras on their establishments. This is in response to the death of Shane Montgomery who was missing for weeks after leaving a Manayunk bar and ultimately found drowned in the Schuylkill River. Police didn't get their first glimpse of Shane on video until 2 weeks after he disappeared.

Lower Merion's Police Superintendent Michael McGrath says that cops acted appropriately last week when they stopped and questioned five African American men who were going door-to-door shoveling walks. McGrath says the men were violating a township ordinance that regulates door-to-door solicitation. None were arrested or issued citations.

The non-profit group, Philadelphia School Partnership has launched an effort to enroll 15,000 more students in new charter schools. The group has offered $35 million to the city School District to make it happen. The School Reform Commission now must decide whether it will approve any new charters or accept the money.
