Lyft Starts in Philly, Already Fined; No Charges in DE Car Jacking; Bryn Mawr Fat Shaming Email

Philadelphia has a new ride sharing service operating in the city limits. Lyft starting running rides in Philly at 6 p.m. on Friday. The service is like Uber where customers can hire a ride using a mobile app and get the closest driver who uses their own car to provide the service. All payments are done via credit card through the app. However, also like Uberx, the service is banned in the city by the Philadelphia Parking Authority citing safety and insurance concerns but also because they are protecting the existing taxi cab medallion structure. The PPA has vowed that they will enforce their rules and fine and/or impound the cars of Lyft drivers as they have been doing with Uberx drivers. As of Thursday, the Public Utility Commission has approved these services in every other county in the state. The PPA (also a state agency) is getting pressure to also start working with these ride sharing services. In the meantime the PPA has already impounded it's first Lyft car. Unlike Uber vehicles, Lyft driver's are easily spotted because of the pink fuzzy “glowstache” they attach to the front of their car.

There will be no charges filed following an alleged car jacking of a Homeland Security agent in Wilmington, DE on Friday morning. The incident happened shortly after 8 a.m. on the second floor of a parking garage at 11th and Tatnell Streets. The agent was parking his government vehicle when it was previously reported that a 32-year-old man attempted to steal the car. The agent fired a shot from his government issued weapon and the man fled the garage. Wilmington Police apprehended him shortly after. After an investigation, though, it was determined that the man's actions did not constitute attempted car jacking and he was released without any charges being filed. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Division of Homeland Security is investigating the agent's actions and are determining if he fired his weapon in self defense or if it discharged accidentally.

Angelo Cataldi of 94.1 WIP released this video of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie falling off a chair in the CBS Radio studios during a Morning Show appearance last June. Cataldi showed the video on Friday morning during 94WIP's Wing Bowl 23 at the Well's Fargo Center. It was meant as a jab at the governor's well publicized fandom of the Dallas Cowboys. There was even an impersonator Christie and Dallas owner Jerry Jones sitting in a box at Wing Bowl all morning.

Some students at Bryn Mawr college received an email from the health center asking them to enroll in an individualized weight loss program. The program would include counseling, nutrition advice, group support and a personalized fitness plan. The 100 women were targeted based on records at the college's health center and the individual's Body Mass Index (BMI). Now the program has been offered in the past with success from its participants, but the automatic and unsolicited nature of this semester's recruitment methods have left many at Bryn Mawr with a bad taste in their mouths. Many of the women who received a message have said they don't even see themselves as being overweight and getting a message saying they are was a big hit to their self-esteem. Others have called it 'fat-shaming' and 'body policing'. The school has apologized and is looking into what they need to change when inviting students to the program.
