Deadly New Year in Shanghai; Measles Warning; NJ Minimum Wage

About a million people converged on Times Square in New York to ring in 2015. Temperatures were in the 20's as the ball dropped followed by a ton of confetti for the Happy New Year celebration. Things did no go as well at a New Year celebration in Shanghai. Thirty-five people were killed in a stampede at the city’s popular riverfront Bund area. Officials say another 43 people were injured amid the chaos about a half hour before midnight.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health is warning of a possible measles exposure in Philadelphia and Delaware Counties. Officials say someone with measles may have exposed other people at the Please Touch Museum on Monday between 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in the evening. The same person may have also exposed people at the CVS on Lancaster Avenue in Wayne on Sunday between 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. in the evening. Officials say if you have symptoms to see your doctor immediately.

New Jersey is preparing to raise its minimum wage by 13 cents in 2015. Economists and business groups are still sorting out the impact of the $1 hike in 2014. Groups that opposed last year's increase to $8.25 argue that the extent of its harm cannot yet be determined - in part because the wage will keep rising. A boost to $8.38 takes effect today, thanks to a now-automatic annual cost-of-living adjustment that voters approved in 2013. Those in favor of the higher wage say it appears to have done little damage to the state's economy - and has possibly benefited it, with low-income workers believed to be spending the extra money in their paychecks.

Weather
Sunny today. 41 in Center City.
