Forbes releases 2011 Top College Rankings, Philadelphia area Schools in Top 20

Forbes magazine has released it's annual rankings of colleges and universities. The rankings are based on five categories which include postgraduate success (30%), which evaluates alumni pay and prominence; student satisfaction (27.5%), which includes professor evaluations and freshman-to-sophomore retention rates; debt (17.5%), which penalizes schools for high student debt loads and default rates; four-year graduation rates (17.5%); and competitive awards (7.5%), which rewards schools whose students win prestigious scholarships and fellowships like the Rhodes, the Marshall and the Fulbright.

The Forbes list is compiled to evaluate and rank schools so you can determine the best overall quality of a school and the return you can expect for your financial investment.

Topping the list this year is small Mass liberal arts school Williams College. Princeton University was second. Since student debt load is a large factor in the weighting of the ranking, the military institutions do well in this list, since they are free, hence West Point came in 3rd.

Locally in the Top 200, Haverford College ranked 7th, Swarthmore, 16th, Upenn, 52, Bryn Mawr 54, Ursinus, 108, Villanova 119. For the complete list visit http://www.forbes.com/top-colleges/list/#p_1_s_arank_
