As hospitals, health care providers and emergency personnel in Philadelphia prepare for the possibility of an Ebola case here, the two nurses who tested positive for the disease in a Dallas hospital are reportedly doing well. A co-worker who handled a lab specimen from the man who died from Ebola is on a Caribbean cruise and has decided to quarantine herself in her room and is being monitored for symptoms.

Arthur Embiid, the younger brother of Philadelphia 76ers rookie center Joel Embiid, died Thursday in Africa. The cause of death has not been revealed. Embiid, a 7-footer from the University of Kansas, has yet to practice or play in the preseason after having surgery on his right foot. He was the 76ers third overall pick in the draft and is expected to miss a large portion of the regular season. Coach Brett Brown and general manager Sam Hinkie skipped the Sixer’s exhibition game last night against Boston to be with Embiid at his home in Philadelphia.

Unionized teachers around the country are watching the developing situation in Philadelphia after the School Reform Commission unilaterally cancelled its teachers’ contract. Three thousand protesters shut down North Broad Street Thursday and promised more disruptive action if the SRC does not undo their move to save $54 million by making teachers pay toward their health benefits.
