Gay Beating Inspires Support for Hate crime Change; Money Magazine Like Burbs; Reprieve for Allen

In what may be a silver lining in a very dark cloud over Philadelphia, the attack on the gay couple in Center City has galvanized citizens to change hate crime laws at the state and local levels. Legislators here are introducing a bill that would include sexual orientation as a hate crime which would draw an extra 90 days behind bars and a $2,000 fine.

Two Philadelphia suburbs were included in Money Magazine’s “Best Places to Live” lists. Bensalem and Bryn Mawr both got honors. Bensalem ranked at 43 with the magazine noting the town’s access to state parks, concerts at the TD Bank Amphitheater, Parx Casino and racetrack and the local job market. Bryn Mawr on the Main Line landed the #2 spot “Best places to be rich and single” and #5 among “Top earning towns.”

The woman arrested for carrying a legally registered handgun into New Jersey will have to give up the weapon and complete 25 hours of community service as part of her admission into a pre-trial intervention program. Shaneen Allen of South Philadelphia was facing up to 5 years jail time until the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office reversed its decision, possibly over outrage that NFL player Ray Rice was admitted to the program.
