Phillies and Eagles land top talent with Pence and Asomugha

It was a huge Friday in the Philly sports world, and that doesn't count anything that actually happened on the field.

Philadelphia Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. pulled off another great mid-summer deal sending prospects Jarred Cosart, Jonathan Singleton, Josh Zeid and a player to be named to the Houston Astros for All-Star Right Fielder Hunter Pence. This season Pence is hitting .309, with 11 HR, 62 RBI, .356 OBP, and .472 slugging. The right handed bat is a welcomed addition to our already strong lineup, though struggling a little against left handed pitching.

Pence, 28, still has two years left on his contract, so he is not a rental by any means, but this move was made to win now. That does bump Domonic Brown out of the starting job, but makes our bench that much better, if not now if he's optioned down to Lehigh to make room, but in September when rosters expand.

Looking like MLB leaders the Phillies dismantled the NL Central contending Pirates 10-3 tonight. Halladay pitched a gem giving up 1 hit, 0 runs in 7 innings. Pence did start for the Astros but was taken out early as the deal was made.

As for the Eagles, they already made a few great acquisitions in the frenzied free agent season, signing Defensive end Jason Babin, quarterback Vince Young, wide receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins and tight end Donald Lee. But the big news was the signing of free agent Corner Back Nnamdi Asomugha previously of Oakland.

This was a surprise signing for everyone and a big divisional steal for the Eagles, since most thought he'd go to the Cowboys. After the Kevin Kolb trade earlier this week, which brought CB Dominique Rogers-Cromartie from Arizona and the Asomugha signing along with Asante Samuel, the Eagles have three terrific cover cornerbacks to play in the secondary.

What are you thought's on all the moves being made? Any more holes that should be patched up and addressed, or can these teams win it all with what they have on the field?
