What's a Philly Taco?; Philly School District Lays Off 17; Topless Woman Hit By 3 Cars

So, what's a Philly Taco? It's pretty simple really and hungry, inebriated Philadelphians have been creating this concoction for a while now. One popular recipe requires a trip to South Street. First, head to Jim's Steaks at 4th and South to get a cheese steak of your design. Next, walk over to Lorenzo's Pizza (halfway to 3rd and South) and get an extra large slice. Wrap the sandwich with the pizza and viola! Philly Taco. The website City Pass recently listed 15 of America's Most outrageous foods. Three came from Philadelphia, including the that one. The other two were the Jumbo Lump Crab Cheese Fries from Varga Bar and the Sarancha Burger from PYT with has Sarancha Sauce, Ranch Dressing, Salsa, Pepper Jack Cheese, a scoop of guacamole, and warm tortilla chips. Check out the rest of the list here

The Philadelphia School District announced that it will lay off 17 central office employees. Those employees are part of 81 positions the district is eliminating, although 64 of them are currently vacant. The cuts are expected to save $5.4 million. Operating at a $81 million budget deficit, the district is trying to save cash where it can. A few weeks ago Superintendent William Hite announced $32 million in temporary cuts in services including transportation cuts to high schoolers, less frequent school cleanings, and not filling police officer vacancies in order to get schools open on time September 8th. The district is counting on new money from a $2-per-pack cigarette tax that is sitting in state legislature, waiting for them to reconvene September 15th.

A woman died after being hit by three vehicles while crossing the street early Friday morning in North Philadelphia. It happened before 5:00 a.m. at North Broad Street near Belfield Avenue in the city's Logan section. The woman was topless at the time, was not in a crosswalk, and was crossing against the light. She was hit by a white car first and thrown in the air. That driver did not stop. The second driver that hit her did stop and called police. The woman was then hit by a third vehicle that also did not stop, but the driver eventually went to a police station after hearing a news report and is cooperating. She told police she didn't know what she had hit. The victim was taken to Einstein Medical Center where she died. Police are looking for that first driver. The car would have have front end and windshield damage. There are a few surveillance cameras they are reviewing as well.

Tonight,
Mostly Clear, temperatures in the mid/low 70's this evening in Center City
