Laptop Explosion, Gov Corbett Refuses to Sign Budget, SEPTA Tax Relief

A woman in Langhorne is recovering from burns she sustained when her laptop exploded. Loretta Luff (pictured) of Langhorne Manor was checking email while she and her disabled husband were watching the Phillies game. She says her Dell Inspirion 1501 battery pack blew up sending battery acid and burning parts onto her shirt and all around her. She was treated for first and second degree burns after putting out the fires around her.

Governor Tom Corbett withheld his signature from the $29.1 billion budget plan that Republican controlled legislature delivered to him just 90 minutes before the midnight deadline. Corbett was not satisfied that the budget addressed pension issues for employees, which has been a priority in his administration.

Philadelphia City Council is defending its decision to forgive $22 million in taxes from SEPTA. Since 1978 the city had billed SEPTA for taxes on properties it leased to commercial businesses around Philadelphia. But a 2003 state Supreme Court ruling left them in a weak position to collect the money. So the complete $22 million debt is wiped from the books as of today.

Sports
The Phillies start a 10 game road trip tonight in Miami. In the World Cup this afternoon, U.S.A. and Belgium battle for the last spot in the quarter-finals.

Weather
Hot and humid this afternoon. Thunderstorms possible. 93 in Center City.
