Bensalem Cop Stabbed by Escapee; First Grader Brings in Heroin; 76ers Get $82 Million Credit from NJ

A Bensalem police officer was stabbed this afternoon while attempting to arrest an escaped prisoner in Bensalem, Bucks County. Police were notified of the escape at around 12:50 pm. The low risk prisoner went missing from a work release type program in Doylestown. The incident happened at around 1:30 pm near Bristol Pike and Woodhaven Road when the Bensalem officer, 38-year-old Michael Jachimski, saw the prisoner, 23-year-old Matthew Miller, on foot. When Jachimski went to place him under arrest the prisoner began to fight, stabbing the officer in the abdomen. The officer's protective vest took the brunt of the attack and he is expected to be ok. The prisoner jumped into the officer's SUV cruiser. Jachimski tried to taser him, but the suspect was able to speed away. He was apprehended only a few miles away in Philadelphia near Knights Road and Fairdale Drive. Miller was originally in jail for a variety of theft charges. He now faces possible felony escape and attempted homocide of a police officer plus other charges.

UPDATE: Miller was arraigned Tuesday night and held on $5 million bail.

An entire class of 20 first graders was taken to the hospital Tuesday after a 6-year-old girl brought heroin to school. The first grade teacher at Commodore John Barry Elementary School at 59th and Race Streets in the Cobbs Creek section discovered one of students playing with some packets. 11 packets tested positive for heroin, 2 of which were opened. The girl believed to have brought it in complained of dizziness and might have had one in her mouth. As a precaution, they bused all 20 students to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for evaluation. The school was searched and no additional narcotics were found. The mother of the girl was questioned, but has not been charged. Police are still trying to figure out how the little girl got a hold of the deadly substance.

UPDATE: Police searched the girl's home this evening and marijuana was discovered. The 6-year-old girl in this case is now in DHS custody. Charges are pending for the mother and her boyfriend.

The Philadelphia 76ers are the only team in the NBA without their own dedicated practice facility. Their lease at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine just isn't cutting it anymore in today's game. The team has looked at numerous sites in the city, including the Navy Yard, to place a facility, but last week they put a bid on a lot across the river in Camden along the waterfront at MLK Boulevard. Today, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority has approved an $82-million tax credit which is payable over 10 years. That will essentially cover the cost of building a brand new 120,000 sq-ft practice and administration building between the New Jersey Aquarium and Susquehanna Bank Center. The team has to guarantee a minimum of 250 jobs over that period. Construction would begin this fall and it would open June 2016.

Tonight,
Cloudy, chance of a shower/thunderstorm, temperatures in mid/upper 70s this evening in Center City
