On Sunday, June 1st The Philadelphia Songwriters Project hosted a benefit concert for animal welfare at the Boot and Saddle. The Songwriters Project is a 501c3 organization founded in 2003 to help discover, support and promote area singer/songwriters. Dena Marchiony is the Executive Director as well as the major cheerleader for the artists. It is evident that she and they truly admire and appreciate each other.

The Boot and Saddle, which is located on Broad Street, hosted the event. If you have not been to this venue, you ought to catch it. It is a great place for a meal, a drink and a concert.

Ten or so artists performed, all were a sample of the fine music scene that is Philly. The styles ranged from 40's swing performed by Andrea Carlson to Dante Bucci playing the Hung drum, a sort of a steel drum, to Dawn Hiatt a mix of Patsy Cline and Emmylou Harris.

The friendship and camaraderie between and among the artists was evident and a tribute to the artists and Dena. All were very supportive of the youngest artist, Ben Kesseler who is 15. He had a large dose of Dave Matthews influencing his songs and style. At 15 his songs were mature and reflective. I really like “We Think We Know.”

Dan Rendine had a country/blues twist with a strong voice which was especially noteworthy on “Changing The Atmosphere.” If you like the style and sound of Melissa Etheridge then Andrea Nardello is a performer you want to hear. She has a rough edge and bluesy tone to her voice and the songs she writes. Two of her songs that stuck with me are “I Am The Water” and “Drink From The Cup.”

I have seen Amanda Duncan a few times and each time enjoy her more. She is a firecracker, a real dynamo who has a big voice and a contagious enthusiasm for her music. I bought her CD's about 8 months ago and give them a listen when I want to get pumped up. “Ferris Wheel” and “ Cookie Song” are two of my favorites.

I'd like to write something about all the artists, they were all great, but I'll finish with the performer who ended the show Joshua Popejoy. He was accompanied by Andrea Weber a rock cellist with a real passion and intensity for her instrument. You can hear the influence of Matchbox 20 , Dylan, Cash and Young in his songs. His cover of the Radiohead song “Fake Plastic Trees” was exceptional as was an original piece “Choose You Fate And Let Go.” His style is forceful, his delivery comes right at you. A fitting finale for a concert to benefit animals and showcase local talent. All the artists have web and Facebook pages to follow them and buy their music.
