What Is the Future of Recorded Music

Everyone says the record label is dead. Everyone says it’s only a matter of time before Spotify and Pono put Warner and Universal out of business. But I say you’re wrong.

There is absolutely no money left to be made by a record label because, yes no one is buying records anymore. But there will always be a market for recorded music. How do you think those songs you stream on Spotify or Pandora got there? The Majors control all of the streaming services and collect a portion of their revenue. Did you know that the Majors set the $10/month you pay for Spotify? They wouldn't allow the service without an option that provided an alternative revenue stream other than simply advertising.

There has to be recordings, with out recordings the people don’t get to hear the music they want to hear.

And the most impacting factor on recorded music is the love affair that exists between the Majors, and radio stations. People like to think that with YouTube and Pandora that we have gained control over the industry, and we now get to decide what is a hit. I hate to be the one to tell you this but we are not. The industry has changed significantly in the past decade, but that power is the one thing the Majors know they can never give up.

WHY?

It’s simple because if they lose the ability to tell you what music gets played on the radio, not only do they lose control of the industry, but they lose the little access to any sort of significant income through 360 deals, and licensing rights.

So what is the take-away here? Simple, stop saying that record labels are dead because they aren’t. They still have just as much control as they once did, they just don’t have enough money to appear as powerful as they once did. So they hide behind streaming radio, and fm radio, secretly pulling the strings.
