Commissioner Silver bans Sterling from NBA for Life; Nation's Oldest LGBT Bookstore to Close

Today, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced sanctions against Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Sterling has been banned for life from the NBA and fined $2.5 million for racial comments he made in a recorded private conversation between himself and his mistress V. Stiviano. The recording was released to the public on various media sites on Saturday morning. The NBA's investigation determined that the voice on the tape was Sterling's. "We stand together in condemning Mr. Sterling's views," Silver said. "They simply have no place in the NBA." Silver expects to have support from the other owners in forcing Sterling to sell his franchise. Sterling is the NBA's longest-tenured owner. The Clipper's website simply had the message, “We Are One,” following the announcement.

The nation's oldest LGBT bookstore is set to close it's doors next month. Giovanni’s Room first open in 1973 on South Street before moving into the current space at 12th and Pine Streets in Philadelphia's Gayborhood section. Owner Ed Hermance has been trying to find a buyer for the building and business since last summer without luck. Competition from online booksellers such as Amazon has made it hard for Hermance to continue to make money in recent years. He plans to retire and perhaps become a LGBT Philadelphia tour guide. The store will officially close May 17. Merchandise will go on sale April 30th for 25% off.
