Busker Sues For Right to Play, NJ Wildfire, Texting While Driving Citations Down

A 72 year old classically trained street musician has filed a civil lawsuit against the Reading Terminal market, the Pennsylvania Convention Center and at least two Philly cops. You may have seen Felix Wilkins, a busker, playing his Yamaha silver head flute at the Reading Terminal at 12th and Filbert. On January 19th security guards and police physically removed him from the area. However, Wilkins who carries a copy of the city’s public music ordinance, claims he has a right to be there.

A wildfire in New Jersey has destroyed 1,500 acres so far and it is still burning. The fire started in Downe Township, Cumberland County on Wednesday evening. High winds and dry conditions are continuing to fuel the fire but no homes appear to be in immediate danger.

The number of citations police are handing out for texting while driving is declining. Texting while driving was banned in 2012 and Philadelphia handed out 176 citations. In 2013 the number fell to 116. So far in 2014, only 23. Why the decline? Maybe fewer people are doing it. Maybe not. Police have to observe the driver texting and it is difficult to distinguish between texting and making a phone call.

Tonight the Phillies wrap up the series with the Dodgers.

Sunny and windy. 63 in Center City.
