Mom Faces Murder Charges, Liberty High School Lockdown, Nutter Ends Immigrant Policy

A New Jersey mom has some explaining to do in front of a judge after she allegedly tried to kill her three teenage children when she drove their mini-van into the Delaware River. Joann Smith of Florence Township, due in court today, was seen having ice cream with her children just before driving them down a boat ramp into the river. Passerby, Darnell Young saw the car in the water and pulled all to safety.

A lockdown at Liberty High School in Bethlehem was lifted after it was determined a threat was actually a hoax. State Police, FBI and local police responded to a 9-1-1 call that three armed men had entered the school. After several hours of searching turned up nothing, the lockdown was lifted. Now the investigation focuses on who made the bogus call.

Philadelphia has joined the movement to protect immigrants from deportation over minor, non-violent crimes. Mayor Nutter signed an executive order ending the city’s compliance with federal agent’s requests to hold arrested immigrants who would otherwise be released pending trial. Nutter says the negative impact of the procedure is that immigrants hesitate to report or serve as witnesses to crimes over fears of deportation.
