On Friday March 7 at 7PM, Vinyl Revival hosted the showing of two very interesting and entertaining documentaries featuring the music of Philadelphia. As part of the showing we were treated with meeting the driving forces behind these two independent gems, George Manney. Accompanying George this night were Steve Kurtz, DJ with CRUSIN' 92.1 WVLT, and Stephen Caldwell, the leader, historian, and force behind one of Philly's signature singing groups, The Orlons.

If you want to smile, remember a simpler time, revel in your youth, or just get a look at the music scene in Philly, you must give "Meet Me On South Street: The Story of JC Dobbs" a look. The film is a work of love by George Manney. He has sacrificed time, talent, and fortune to save the history of music in Philadelphia. In short, the film is a very personal look at how JC Dobbs nurtured and supported the development of live music and musicians in Philly. Through footage and newer interviews you get a feel for the wild, wide open and very informal way performers were booked, appeared, housed, fead and supported by the scene and the owners of JC Dobbs.

From the early 70's until it's closing in 1996, JC Dobbs was a hot bed of creativity and experimentation for musical artists of all stripes. That very small stage has hosted Dwight Yokum, Lucinda Williams, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, as well as Tommy Conwell, Robert Hazzard, George Thorogood, Bo Diddley, Green Day and many others. The heart and soul of the Philly music scene are interviewed. Their love for the place and the people premeditate the film. Folks like Cindy Drue and Stephen Cadwell add the color commentary turning this film into brilliant technicolor.

The next film is hard to describe, put in a box, get your head around, but "Rufus Harley Pipes of Peace" is the study of a true individual, a true trail blazer, a jazz bag pipe player extraordinaire. To say he was eccentric is to not do him or his craft justice. He was a huge black man in star striped kilts playing jazz on bag pipes. How do you think it went for him? Well he was not accepted by others who played the pipes and many thought him a novelty act. He just brushed it off and kept pushing his music and message of love, acceptance and world peace. He was a serious artist recording 4 albums for Atlantic as well as appearing on The Roots album Do You Want More!!!???!!. I had a grin from stem to stern watching this tribute to Rufus by his friend George Manney. So very touching funny and inspiring that their friendship is the star of this wonderful story.

I also had the great fortune to meet Steve Kurtz and Stephen Cadwell. Steve is a DJ for a local radio station, a DJ and EMCEE. He hosted the event this night and his warmth, knowledge and enthusiasm for the Philadelphia music scene made the night special. If you need a host or DJ you can contact Steve at radiokurtz@yahoo.com. Then there was Stephen Cadwell who is the glue that has kept one of Philadelphia's treasures, The Orlons, together and performing since the 60's. You can reach Stephen for booking etc at goodmusicone@aol.com or 215-748-3636. On a personal note I had the pleasure of working with Jean Brickley, singer with the Orlons, for 10+ years. So, I am not completely a neutral reporter, I am a fan.

The scene at Vinyl Revival is more of a living room rather than a store and performance venue. The proprietors, Greg and Andrea, are hosts, lovers of music and art who give local talent a place to show their works and a place for us to see and enjoy it. Visit them on the web www.vinylrevivalrecords.com or at their store on Lansdowne Ave. Lansdowne, Pa.
