Allen Iverson's #3 jersey was retired tonight in South Philly and raised to the rafters at the Wells Fargo Center in front of 20,000 cheering fans. His becomes the 8th jersey retired by the 76ers. AI was honored during a halftime ceremony and brought the crowd to it's feet with his signature hand-to-the-ear. Also in attendance were Julius Irving, Moses Malone, Dikembe Mutombo, Theo Ratliff, Gary Payton, Pat Croce, and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. Iverson was drafted No. 1 overall by the Sixers in 1996. He played 10 seasons in Philadelphia before spending time in Denver, Detroit, and Memphis. He returned to Philly in 2009-10 for 25 games. His final pro game was overseas in 2010. While here AI collected many accolades including rookie of the year, four scoring titles, and the 2001 MVP on the way to the NBA Finals loss to the Lakers. The Sixers might be in serious rebuilding mode now, and sellout crowds aren't coming out for this team, but Philly does love basketball and we showed tonight what we do for winners.

Up to a foot is possible across the area in the latest winter storm to affect our snow weary area. A Winter Storm Watch is already in effect from 6pm Sunday to 6pm Monday, which will certainly turn into a Warning as the storm gets closer. The precipitation could start as a mix of rain, sleet and freezing rain before turning to all snow through Monday. The heaviest snow could impact on Monday morning during the 6am-11am hours. This storm as the potential to drop 6-12” of snow and more an all areas both north and south of Philadelphia. Only 6 inches would bring us to the 2nd snowiest season in history. (see map below)

The United States Navy commissioned is newest ship this afternoon at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia. Around 5,000 crowded onto the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing to witness the commissioning of the USS Somerset, named in honor of the 40 passengers of Flight 93 who died in the September 11th terrorist attacks. The amphibious transport dock warship is the third ship to be named in honor of 9/11 victims, joining the USS New York and the USS Arlington for those who died at the World Trade Center and Pentagon. This ship's name comes from the Pennsylvania county where Flight 93 crashed after the terrorist's hijacking attempt was thwarted by the passengers. The USS Somerset will be docked at Penn's Landing until Tuesday.
