Tastykake Turns 100; Former Hero Cop Pleads Guilty; $10k Reward For Overbrook Robberies

One of Philadelphia's most beloved icons, Tastykake Bakery, celebrated it's 100th birthday today. The company sent out 100 special deliveries of baked treats to area charities and first responders from it's Navy Yard headquarters. City Hall, Red Cross, Philabundance, and local police and fire stations were a few to receive the packages of Butterscotch Krimpets and Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes. A limited edition Birthday Kake Cupcake will be made in honor of the anniversary. The company was started in 1914 by a Pittsburgh baker and a Boston egg salesman. They made 100 cakes on the first day of business. Now the bakery produces 5 million each day. Tasty Baking Co. became part of Georgia-based Flowers Foods Inc. in 2011.

A former hero cop plead guilty today to reduced charges in a case involving the drugging and assault of two women. Richard DeCoatsworth was arrested in May 2013 and charged with Rape, Indecent Deviant Sexual Intercourse, Sexual Assault and other offenses after authorities said he drugged and raped two women and forced them into prostitution. He made the women take heroin and perform oral sex on him. Today he plead guilty to Promoting Prostitution, Possession and Distribution of Illegal Narcotics, and Simple Assault. DeCoatsworth has been in jail since his arrest on $3 million bail. Sentencing is set for March 11th. He faces 7-14 years in prison. In 2007, he was shot in the face during a traffic stop, but was still able to follow his attacker and relay enough information to fellow officers that he was caught. For his heroism he was invited to sit next to First Lady Michele Obama at the 2009 State of the Union.

There is now a $10,000 reward being offered by the City of Philadelphia for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect wanted in a series of robberies and purse snatchings in the Overbrook section. The man has struck at least eight times since January 8th. In each of the attacks the women are approached from behind, then the suspect demands or grabs their purse/belongings. He is described as a black man, ages 20-27, about 5' 7”, slim build, mustache, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and jeans. See sketch below. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Southwest Detectives Division at 215-686-3183.

Tonight,
Partly Cloudy, temperatures around 30 this evening in Center City
