Comcast to buy Time Warner for $44.2 Billion

Philadelphia-based Comcast is expected to announce Thursday that it has reached an agreement to buy Time Warner Cable for $44.2 billion in stock or around $159 per share.

Currently, Comcast has around 22 million subscribers or 21 percent of the country's pay-TV homes. The acquisition would increase that customer base to 33 million subscribers or 33 percent, solidifying Comcast's spot as the top provider of cable television services.

The deal is still subject to approval of shareholders of both companies. The deal will also have pass muster with federal regulators who are looking out for how it will affect the consumer. Comcast and Time Warner do not compete in many markets. Also, some subscribers could be shed to reduce market share under 30 percent.

Left behind in all of this is Charter Communications who was also bidding to takeover Time Warner.
