Jones Family May Sue Over Morey Ferris Wheel Accident

On June 3rd, 11-year old, Abiah Jones fell to her death from the Ferris wheel at Morey's Pier in Wildwood, NJ. She was on a school trip to the beach resort. At a press conference in Philadelphia on Tuesday, June 14, lawyers for the family said they were considering filing suit against Morey's.

She was alone in her car and about halfway up the 156 foot high wheel when she fell. There were no mechanical or operational problems found with the ride. The exact cause of the accident is still unknown, but it seems that she just fell out. It is not known what she was doing at the exact moment before the fall, area cameras do not capture that angle. At this point it is still a freak accident.

The family believes that if there were bars or cages around the gondola that Abiah would have been kept in, or if riders were strapped down with restraints that this accident would have been avoided.

"That's not necessary," said Will Morey president of Morey's Piers, "So long as there's proper containment, it's a very mild ride and it's really enjoyable by parties just to have a panoramic view, its really uninterrupted just by birdcage type bars."

The Jones family can't take too much comfort in those beautiful vistas, knowing that they no longer have their daughter. If they do follow through on the lawsuit, they hope it can also bring sweeping changes to similar rides across the country so that this can't happen again.

It is a Ferris wheel, not a roller coaster, but it does go pretty high. The best advice is to sit down, put on the seat belt and stay in the seat. Don't get up, lean over the edge, rock the cart, etc.
