Immigration Office Protest, Health Club Bomb Scare, Haverford College No-Loan Proposal

Protesters blocked access to the Philadelphia immigration office yesterday demanding a halt to deportations. They blocked two driveways at the detention center of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. About 40 protesters hoped to stop vans that transport immigrant detainees to prisons. The 2 hour standoff ended without incident. Protests are part of a national movement of organizers growing impatient with President Obama’s failure to enact immigration reform.

There was a bomb scare at a Philadelphia gym this morning. A disgruntled member at Planet Fitness on the 500 block of Adams Avenue got into an argument with employees about his membership. He threatened to blow up the business, left and returned later leaving a military–style canister outside the building. Bomb squad determined it was not explosive and the member was arrested.

Haverford College is considering eliminating its “no-loan” financial-aid policy, in place since 2007. The move would require middle-class students to resume borrowing to finance their education. Several others, including Dartmouth made a similar move four years ago because the program is costly. Haverford’s board of managers will vote in February.
