Joe Frazier Statue Approved, Love Park Restaurants Proposed

Legendary boxer Joe Frazier, who made Philadelphia his home, will be memorialized in a 9 foot statue to be placed in the stadium complex area in South Philly. The Art Commission approved sculptor Stephen Layne's design yesterday. The pose is from one of Frazier's most storied moments, his knockdown of Muhammad Ali with a left hook in the 15th round of the "Fight of the Century" in 1971. Joe Frazier was the first to beat Ali.

City Council President Darrell Clarke would like to put seven restaurants in Love Park. He says leasing rights to the restaurant space would pay for upgrades to the park without using taxpayer dollars. Mayor Nutter’s plan to sell the garage under the park and Clarke’s plan to add restaurants and an event stage will be debated in the new year.

Sports
The Phillies have traded backup catcher Erik Kratz and a minor-league pitcher to the Blue Jays for right-handed reliever Brad Lincoln, who pitched part of last very well with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Weather
Showers today. 63 in Center City.
