The Philadelphia Flyers fired coach Peter Laviolette today after an 0-3 start. Assistant Craig Berube, in his seventh season with the organization, will take over as the 18th coach in Flyers history. Laviolette was hired early into the 2009 season and led the Flyers to the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals. They made the playoffs the next two seasons but failed last season. All four sports teams in Philadelphia have now changed their head coach in the past 10 months. Berube joins Chip Kelly of the Eagles, Brett Brown of the Sixers, and Ryne Sanberg of the Phillies in the new class of coaches.

Philadelphia Police are saying that a mother and son found dead under a mattress in their apartment Saturday morning were killed before it was set on fire. 35-year-old Atlanta Deveney and her 12-year-old son Elijah Rosado were found in a closet underneath a burning mattress in their first floor unit on the 4600 block of Howell Street in the Wissinoming section. Deveney suffered trauma to her head and Rosado had stab wounds to his chest and neck. Police are looking for Deveney's boyfriend, 25-year-old Carlos Rivera, who is labeled as a strong person-of-interest. On Saturday around 9 am as smoke started to fill the building, Rivera was spotted in the hallway asking for a fire extinguisher but also telling neighbors, 'Don't call the police, we'll handle it, we'll handle it.' They called 911 anyway.
