Schools Ignore Teacher Seniority, Paterno Billboard, Best Places to Live in Philadelphia

The Philadelphia School Reform Commission has voted to ignore seniority when rehiring teachers this year. Teachers are angry but William R. Hite says the plan gives the school district flexibility in hiring teachers for where they are most needed. Mayor Nutter wants to borrow $50 million to fund the schools, but City Council is not buying into the his plan.

A billboard near a rural central Pennsylvania highway is touting the accomplishments of late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. The two-panel board touts Paterno's 409 career victories beneath a blue sign with lettering that reads, "You can't cover up 61 years of success with honor." A group called Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship designed similar billboards last fall, but the group says they are not behind this one and doesn't know who is.

Money Magazine recognized several Philadelphia area towns on its annual “Best Places to Live” list. West Goshen in Chester County got highest honors coming in at #10 and the magazine points out its lush suburban feel with quiet, tree-shaded streets, lovely parks and plenty of community activities. Also getting mentions this year, Horsham and Haddonfield.
