Phillies flailing before trade deadline; Sign Cuban prospect Gonzalez; Cliff Lee scratched Saturday

The Philadelphia Phillies dropped it's sixth straight game after winning the first following the All-Star Break. That first game back they scored 13 runs against the Mets, they've only scored 10 runs total in the six since. With some positive momentum into the break a few weeks ago the team was looking to be possible buyers at the deadline. After this streak of losses and high profile additions to the disabled list, including Domonic Brown, Ryan Howard and Ben Revere, this season is going distinctly the other way at decision time for Ruben Amaro.

What happens over these next few days could shape the team for years to come. Starting with one deal on the books, the Phillies won a bidding war across MLB and signed 26-year-old Cuban prospect Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez for 6 years and $60 million.

Cliff Lee will not pitch Saturday. He was scratched from his scheduled start due to a "stiff neck". That could mean he actually is hurt or they are possibly holding him back as trade bait. Chase Utley's contract is expiring this season, but word had been that they are looking to offer him an extension. Carlos Ruiz's contract is also up this off-season. He has not been doing well at the plate at all this year and could potentially be traded.

The team needs help in the outfield, bullpen, and offense. It may just be too late for this team to think they can make a run at the playoffs this year. So do they think about the future and unload their veterans to teams in the race for prospects ? Do they try to address this year's concerns and buy players to fill the holes? or Do they do nothing and try to stay afloat and wait for all their starters to come back from the DL?

Remember the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline isn't the end of trade season. Amaro can still make changes through August with the waiver wire. A lot is going to start happening the next few days though.
