US Education Secretary Criticizes Philly Schools, 4th of July Forecast, School Audit Reveals Theft

United States Education Secretary, Arne Duncan says there is no excuse in the 21st century for any school system to be in the financial position Philadelphia’s school system is in. Duncan is working closely with Mayor Nutter, Governor Corbett, Superintendent William R. Hite and Teachers Union head, Jerry Jordan to change a system that put Philly’s schools in a $300 million hole.

The weather for the long 4th of July weekend should cooperate with the parades, picnics, beach days, barbeques and fireworks in our plans. The rain we’ve been enduring will move out and high pressure is moving in bringing dry air and heat. Temperatures will be in the 90’s through the weekend and only a slight chance of isolated storms.

Philadelphia City Controller Alan Butkovitz released an audit report yesterday revealing that $196,000 in assets were missing from Philadelphia schools. The items include laptops, musical instruments, furniture, snow blowers and more. After schools close, many valuable assets are left behind, such as band uniforms, textbooks, even a grand piano.

Sports
The Phillies are in Pittsburgh tonight with the Pirates.

Weather
Humid with isolated thunderstorms today. 84 in Center City.
