A Great Big World at the World Cafe 6/5/13 review

The concert last week at the World Cafe Live in Philly was a surprising mix of comedy and inspiring music. The night opened with Rebecca Haviland and the Whiskey Hearts. Only one of the four other Hearts performed, yet the music was very well done. Rebecca has a very strong voice with a hint of Bonnie Raitt coming through. She performed six songs with the most notable being a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “ Black Dog”.

The second act was Julia Nunes, a really talented and funny singer/songwriter. She performed eight songs that expose the absurdity of love and relationships. She is an accomplished musician having won the Bushman World Ukulele Video Contest as well as appearing with Ben Folds and Weezer. I really enjoyed her performance, laughed a number of times and found her music poignant. I bought her CD ,Settle Down. The audience really got into her music and comedy. It was obvious many were there to see her. “Pizza”,”Maybe I Will”and “This Is What I Use To Know” were may favorites

I went to see a A Great Bid World after seeing a number of their videos on You Tube. I was not disappointed in fact I was pleasantly surprised with the power , drive and stage presence of the group. Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino, who are A Great Big World, were accompanied by bass and led guitar players and a drummer. The chemistry was there. The joy and fun they were having was contagious and the audience sang along and clapped with the songs. I found myself smiling with and for them. The vast majority of their music is positive and fun. I'd like to mention the exception performed by Ian Axel titled, There Is An Answer”. The song deals with searching for one's identity. A very touching and though provoking tune.

The set consisted of:
“Rock Star”
“I Really Want It”
“Land Of Opportunity”
“You'll Be OK”
“Cheer Up”
“There Is An Answer”
“Say Something”
“This Is The New Year”
“Stay Awake'

“This Is The New Year” is the song which has enabled them to get a record deal. They were just signed by Decca Records. “This Is The New Year” has been featured on Glee and as a movie track. The band was so joyous over the record contract it permeated the audience. The air of excitement turned into an end of program group sign along. All of the performers came back on stage and led the audience in an soulful rendition of Justin Timberlake's “ Mirrors”. The harmony was something to be heard and the audience could not get enough. I give the performance five stars for wanting to sing along and four stars for us air guitar wannabe’s on the strength of Julia Nunes ukulele performance. Joe
