Lightning Interrupts Tiger, Doomsday Budget School Layoffs, Council Investigates Demo Procedures

Lightning at Merion Golf Course interrupted Tiger Woods' scheduled 6:45 tee time this morning. This is the first official day of practice rounds for the U.S. Open in Haverford Township. The event is expected to draw more than 25,000 spectators a day.

Since the adoption of the Doomsday budget last week more than 3800 layoff notices have been sent to Philadelphia School District employees. The move is an effort to fill the $300 million gap in the budget. School administrators are hoping for more funding from the city and state so some cuts can be rescinded.

Philadelphia City Council is forming an investigative committee that will review city regulations, licenses, permits and procedures related to building construction and demolition. Following the deadly building collapse last week, a heavy equipment operator has also been charged with six counts of involuntary manslaughter. He was believed to be high on marijuana. His attorney denies he was responsible.
