The American Idol Finale 2013 occurred on May 16th, 2013 at the Nokia Theatre L.A. live in Los Angeles. 23-year-old vocal powerhouse Candice Glover and soulful 22-year-old country singer Kree Harrison were the top two contestants going head to head for the top prize of becoming the new American Idol for Season 12. The show started off with the introduction of the judges from the season: Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, and Randy Jackson.

All of the final contestants from Season 12 came out to start the show with singing together, "I’m Glad You Came." The Band Perry sang their song, "Done" with contestant, Janelle Arthur. Next, the top 5 male contestants sang a series of different songs from the popular 1960s American Rock and Pop Band, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons with Frankie Valli joining the boys on stage.

Mariah Carey came out in a beautiful, sequined white gown and sang a melody of her top hits. Randy Jackson played guitar during her performance.

A musical number between Kree Harrison, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson occurred. Other performances included: Angie Miller with Jessie J and Adam Lambert, Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez, the top five females with Aretha Franklin, Amber Holcomb, and Emeli Sande. Also, Psy sang his new hit, “Gentleman.”

One of the most memorable performances from the night was the duet between Candice Glover and Season 3 contestant Jennifer Hudson performing Natalie Cole's "Inseparable.". The judges gave them a standing ovation.

The new American Idol was named at the end of the show. After much suspense, the winner was... Candice Glover. She was in amazement and sang her last song with tears of happiness in her eyes. The song, "I Am Beautiful", will serve as her first single.

Glover also has bucked the American Idol trend over the last five years. The WGWG or "white guy with guitar" trend has been the rule for winning in recent memory. The previous five winners - Phillip Phillips, Scotty McCreery, Lee DeWyze, Kris Allen and David Cook - were all Caucasian guitar players. It hasn't been since Jordin Sparks in 2007, Season 6 that someone different has won.

In judging changes, Randy Jackson has already made known that this will be his last year judging on the American Idol panel. He has judged all twelve seasons and is the last original judge to leave the show. He his going to focus on his record label and other business ventures. He's taking his "yo, dawg" to new pastures.
