Powerball Jackpot over $550 Million, Hite to End Teacher Seniority, Nutter Honors Centenarians

The Powerball ticket buying frenzy for tomorrow's drawing has pushed the jackpot to over a half a billion dollars. Currently the $550 million jackpot ranks the second biggest of all time. However it appears likely that brisk ticket sales before tomorrow’s drawing will push the jackpot past the record $587.5 million Powerball jackpot from November 2012.

Philadelphia School Superintendent William R. Hite is hoping to end teacher seniority in an effort to convince the state to kick in $120 million. Hite says he knows Pennsylvania will not support a system that gives teachers raises simply because they remained on the job another year. Outside the city, Philadelphia schools are considered to be wasting money and not serving children.

Michael Nutter honored Philadelphia’s oldest residents at the 13th annual Mayor’s Centenarian Celebration. The event honors city residents 100 years old and older. The oldest Philadelphia resident is Anna Henderson. At 113 years old Henderson is the sixth oldest American and the world’s 15th oldest person.
