Mayor Michael Nutter announced a funding package today that would give the Philadelphia School District $95 million in additional budget. That is significantly more than the $60 million the district requested to fill it's current budget gap. $22 million would come from raising the liquor-by-the-drink tax from 10 percent to 15 percent effective July 1st. The city would also add an additional $2 per pack tax on cigarettes on top of the regular taxes starting January 1st hoping to raise $45 million. The other money would come from an increase in revenue projections from property taxes due to improvements in the city’s collection efforts. The liquor and tobacco tax changes would need state authorization and City Council approval to take effect.

An 18-year-old Southwest Philadelphia man has been arrested and charged in connection to the murder of a popular DJ on South St. last weekend. Josephe Murray, of Reedland Street, is charged with shooting 36-year-old Tom Watson during a robbery. Watson aka DJ Fenicx was entering his apartment above the Haagen Dazs Ice Cream shop at 2nd and South St early Saturday morning when he was attacked and shot by Murray and an accomplice. Police found an undisclosed amount of cocaine and marijuana in Watson's apartment and have not said whether the drugs played any role in his murder. Murray is charged with murder, robbery and related offenses. Police are still searching for a second suspect.

A 79-year-old doctor in Delaware county has been accused of running a pill mill out of his home based practice in Lansdowne. Lenwood Wert is facing more than 500 counts of felonious sales of prescriptions for controlled substances. Wert would write presciptions for Oxycodone, Xanax and Percocet for $100 without doing a medical exam. Some patients would use the scripts personally to keep up their own habits while others would resell the drugs. Undercover officers posed as patients to break the case against Wert. Prosecutors estimate he was bringing in almost $12,000 a week writing prescriptions.

Phillies lost today 10-4, Hamels drops to 1-6.
This evening, Partly Cloudy, temperatures around 70 in Center City.
