Peeps turn 60, 1 Billion made for Easter; Cardinal Conclave Set Tuesday; Liberty Bell Bomber Held

This morning many of us woke up to a surprise layer of fresh snow, a day late from the forecast. However, we are only a few weeks away from spring time and of course Easter. Chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, and dyed eggs will fill our baskets and are appearing on stores' shelves, but one thing's for sure, we can't get enough of those marshmallow chicks. Believe it or not but Peeps have turned 60. This year, Bethleham, PA based Just Born, Inc. will be popping out 1 billion marshmallow chicks and bunnies just for the Easter season – a record. The candy maker also makes favorites like Mike and Ike, Hot Tamales, Goldenbergs Peanut Chews, and their own Jelly Beans. They hit record sales in 2012. Next time you eat one of those little Peeps, just know it was born just up the road in Bethleham.

Catholic Cardinals in Vatican City have set Tuesday, March 12th as the start of the Conclave to elect the next pope. This comes after a week of discussions and deliberations amongst the College of Cardinals about all issues surrounding the church, its governance, various problems, and who might be best to lead going forward. Not all discussion is based on negative topics such as corruption, money, or scandal but primarily focused on preaching and teaching the faith, schools and hospitals, and outreach for the discernment of young men to the priesthood. Once the Cardinals go into the Sistine Chapel they will surrender their electronics, and vote on paper. White smoke from the burning of ballots will signal a new pope has been chosen. A two thirds majority is needed, meaning 77 of the 115 voting members of the college. No Conclave has gone longer than five days, so we can expect a new pope in about a week.

A former Arizona State University professor has been ordered to stand trial on various charges including making bomb threats inside the Liberty Bell Center. On January 26th, 41-year-old Carlos Balsas, who is a citizen of Portugal, entered the Liberty Bell Center on Independence Mall carrying a messenger bag and backpack. When a security screener went to check the bags, Balsas refused to hand them over and said, “There’s explosives in there.” He then walked off before an armed security guard could be called over. National Park Service rangers caught up with him nearby at 7th and Market Streets and arrested him. The bomb squad closed off the area and inspected the bags but found no explosives. Philadelphia assistant district attorney Rob Frantz could only wonder what Balsas was thinking. He remains in jail on $250,000 cash bail.
