Girl Petitions CYO to Play Football, Marijuana Use in PA, Archdiocese Merging 6 Parishes

An 11 year old Bucks County girl is petitioning the Catholic Youth Organization in Philadelphia to allow her to play football. Caroline Pla has been playing football since she was 5 and had been on the Roman’s squad who was unaware of the “no girls allowed” rule. With the support of her mom and about 7,000 others, the CYO has decided to review the policy.

Recreational use of marijuana is legal now in Washington and Colorado. Is Pennsylvania next? Not likely. Franklin and Marshall College Research Analyst, Terry Madonna says that voters from rural PA are very conservative on social issues. His surveys show PA voters support marijuana use for medical purposes, but not for parties.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia will close three parishes in West Philadelphia, merging them with three others nearby. As attendance at weekly Mass, marriages and baptisms have declined, the mergers are part of a larger reorganization throughout the Archdiocese. Effective January 27th, St. Callistus will merge with Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Mother of Sorrows will merge with St. Ignatius of Loyola, and Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament will merge into St. Cyprian.
