Congress Vote on Sandy Relief, Flu Widespread in Pennsylvania, Effort to Save Strawberry Mansion HS

Congress votes today to approve a $9.7 billion bill to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. The money will replenish the National Flood Insurance Program. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie publicly criticized House Speaker John Boehner and Congress for postponing the vote so long. The vote on the remainder of the $60 billion relief bill has been put off until January 15th.

Flu season is off to an early start in the Philadelphia region. Care centers are reporting they are seeing twice the number of patients with flu-like symptoms than in prior years. The Center for Disease Control says more than 200 people in Pennsylvania have been hospitalized with the flu. Peak flu season is January and February. Already the CDC considers the flu to be "widespread" in Pennsylvania.

There is a push in the community to save Strawberry Mansion High School, one of 37 schools the Philadelphia School District plans to close. Residents and supporters met Thursday night to brainstorm ideas for two hours. While there is passion for the school, they realize they face an uphill battle at a district run community meeting this Tuesday at Dobbins High School.

Basketball tonight, the 76ers are at the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Clear skies. 37 in Center City.
