The Philadelphia School District will be installing free condom dispensers in 22 high schools over winter break as a pilot program. (see list of schools) The dispensers are being placed in the schools that have the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases and will be available to all students, except those whose parents signed an opt-out form. The School District has been providing free condoms to students since April 2011 in their health resource centers as well as when the Health Department visits schools. The dispensers will be placed inside the nurse's office but they will not be in charge of controlling access. Students whose parent's signed an opt-out form will have to honor that on their own. Officials acknowledge that many parent's of teenagers will not be happy with the program, however, they say the reality is many teenagers are engaged in sexual activity and should have access to condoms if they need and want them. Officials feel the discussion of whether a teen should be engaged in sexual activity should be left at home. The Health Department will cover the costs of the program.

Shoppers are taking advantage of the clear weather today to get in all their last minute shopping. Malls across the area of full of people filling out their Christmas lists. Most shopping malls have extended hours on Sunday open to 9, 10, or even 11 pm tonight. Tomorrow, Christmas eve, they are open until 6 pm. Area grocery stores are also full of shoppers as people are stocking up for holiday meals this week.

After the success of last weekend's gun buyback in Camden, New Jersey officials are considering expanding the program in to other cities throughout the state. The tragedy in Newtown, CT happened in the middle of the 2-day state sponsored buyback in Camden and helped spur a record collection of firearms. More than 1,100 weapons were brought in buy the public and sold back for $150,000 in criminal forfeiture money. Encouraged by these results New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said, “I certainly intend to explore the potential of doing it in other places in New Jersey as well in communities where we can take these guns out of circulation.”
