"Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" returns to Philly TV tonight; Watch NBC10 Tonight at 8pm

Before there was "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (1964), "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (1965), "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (1965), or "Frosty the Snowman" (1969), NBC first aired an animated Christmas special starring the unlikely character of the famously nearsighted Quincy Magoo. "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" was a musical adaptation of the Dickens work with Magoo playing the part of Ebenezer Scrooge in a theatrical production.

It first aired on NBC at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 18, 1962. It debuted to critical acclaim for it's take on Dickens, the music and lyrics of composer July Styne and lyricist Bob Merrill, and the work of Jim Backus as the voice of Magoo. Despite the critical acclaim it failed to catch on as a perennial favorite.

It was highly influential on the traditional and stop-motion animation specials that followed, most of which have become annual events across network television. The last airing of Magoo's special on NBC was in 1967.

Tonight, 50 years since it's original debut, NBC will play the original Christmas animation classic, tonight, December 22nd at 8pm. Here in Philadelphia you can see it on NBC 10. It was also released in July as Blu-ray + DVD collector's edition by Classic Media. christmasclassics.tv
