Phillies Finish .500, Fire 3 Coaches, 9 Year Winning Streak is Over

The Phillies lost today 5-1 to the 2012 NL East Champion Washington Nationals. They finished the season with a completely unexciting 81-81 record. If you asked anyone at this point last year, when we finished the season off with a team record 102 wins and the best record in MLB, if this would be the scenario left to us this afternoon, most people would have thought it was a hearty joke (even those wishy washy bandwagon fans on the Beltway). It's hard to get extremely mad because it was written on the wall from Opening Day. Utley had to take months to rub his knees out and of course Howard exploded his Achilles'. Halladay just wasn't himself and took time off from rotation as well. They were horrible at the All Star break just 37-50, but turned it on in the second half, even after dealing away a chunk of their starters, finishing up 44-31. They've always been a second half team.

There are plenty of questions for Ruben Amaro Jr. and Charlie Manual to figure out for next year. We have an outfield to put together with young guys who got a chance to play this year. The Phillies also have a big hole at third base, which maybe but probably not could see Utley trying out. The setup roles in the bullpen are of concern.

Immediately after the game today the Phillies fired first base coach Sam Perlozzo, bench coach Pete Mackanin and hitting coach Greg Gross.

This season marks the end of a 9 year streak of winning seasons and a 5 year streak of Division titles for the Phillies.
