Hoax Call Wrongly Diverts Plane and Detains Passenger at PHL; Join Million Father March in Philly

A US Airways flight bound for Dallas, TX was diverted back to Philadelphia International Airport this morning after a telephone tip was received by police that a passenger on the plane may have explosives. That call was later deemed a hoax, but not until after the plane returned to Philadelphia and SWAT stormed the passenger cabin. The unidentified target was led off in handcuffs and told to kneel on the tarmac while bomb-sniffing dogs searched his belongings and the plane. He was then led off in a squad car for questioning. He was quickly cleared and allowed to rebook his flight. The passengers and crew were allowed to reboard the plane and continue to Texas. The investigation continues as to why someone would place a false tip implicating this individual as a threat. The hoax tipster faces federal charges.

UPDATE: The man forced off the plane has been identified as 29-year-old Christopher Shell. Supposedly the hoax was called in on him stemming from bad blood from a recent bad breakup. His ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend were taken in for questioning, and the boyfriend is being held and will be charged. Shell on the other hand was arrested when he arrived in Dallas because he is wanted on an outstanding warrant. He was flying to Dallas to visit family because today was his birthday.

Philadelphia is one of 800 cities participating in the Million Father March. As part of the 2012 march, Fathers across the country and in our area are asked to walk their children to school for their first day of class on Friday and again on Monday. It is part of the larger effort to encourage fathers to get involved in the lives of their children. The first march was held in Chicago in 2004, Philadelphia first participated in 2007. Showing support for your child and being on their side can help the quality of their education and push them to excel. The organized march starts at 7 a.m. Friday and Monday at the House of Umoja at 5625 Master St. Philadelphia.
