Sunday at the Made in America Festival; Music flows through the rain... Pearl Jam Setlist

Sunday broke on the Parkway to cloudy skies and intermittent rain showers, but that didn't damper the spirits of the fans who were ready to tackle the second day of the Made in America Festival. Today's lineup, much like yesterday's, featured an assortment of Hip Hop, Rock, R&B, and DJ acts both young and old. Here is what I was able to catch.

Philadelphia native Santigold put on a dazzling set on the Rocky Stage. Her style is hard to categorize since her influences are as broad as her collaborators, but her vocals just breeze through the beat driven, ethnic tinged, indie fueled, r&b jams. Her stage set up is simple, but the eccentric costuming and pair of talented dancers made for a great start to the day.

The Hives rocked the Liberty stage to a throughly wet crowd. The group from Sweden that came of age during the garage rock revival of the early-2000's showed they still put on one of the most energetic rock shows around. Lead singer Pelle Almqvist couldn't resist heading into the crowd every chance he could, as well as flashing his best Mick Jagger at will. They played their biggest hit "Hate to Say I Told You So" as well as their new single
"Go Right Ahead.”

Jill Scott graced the Rocky Stage looking wonderful and performed marvelously to her hometown crowd. She even called up fellow Philadelphia R&B star, Eve, to join her on stage. They performed “Let Me Blow Your Mind” together.

Run DMC reunited on stage for the first time in over a decade, since Jam Master Jay was fatally shot in 2002. They honored their longtime DJ on Sunday; the video banner above the stage read also “Jam Master Jay Forever” throughout their set. His sons TJ and J'Son came out to perform on the turntables. Rev Run and DMC played all their hits including, “It's Tricky,” “Mary Mary,” “Walk this Way,” and “Run's House.” It's amazing to think they haven't been on stage for 10 years, they laid it down. Run DMC showed all the other young Hip Hop groups this weekend how it's done.

X was the one band I was most excited about today. Except for the fact that they have been opening for Pearl Jam in Europe this summer, they are also the one act on the lineup that seemed most out of place. The Los Angeles punk rockers formed in 1977, releasing most of their albums in the '80s. X played a ripping set on the Liberty Stage, providing a jarring juxtaposition to much of today's beat based music. They dipped back into their catalog playing such tracks as “Los Angeles” and “Johnny Hit and Run Paulene.”

Pearl Jam closed out the night and the festival. The setlist was heavy on the 90's. They ended the night with a collaboration with Jay-Z doing 99 Problems.

The Made in America festival has now come and gone with about 40,000 attendees each day. From the many diverse acts on the stages to the DJs mixing in the Dance tent music took over on our boulevard normally reserved for the halls of the visual arts. It'll take a while to know the full impact of this festival on the city financially, but there were no major issues surrounding the operations, traffic, or safety. This was another showcase event that put the City of Philadelphia on display.
