Paul Ryan Visits West Chester, Philly Archdiocesan HS Independently Managed; ATV/Dirt bike Crackdown

Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan made a stop in our area today, giving most of us a first glimpse at the Congressman from Wisconsin. Mitt Romney's running mate spoke at a rally outside the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center in West Chester to a crowd of about 3000. He spoke about Medicare and the attention his controversial plan to convert the program to a cash payout instead of a guaranteed federal health benefit for future retirees has received since his selection. Philadelphia county overwhelmingly votes Democrat, but the suburban counties could prove to be a battleground in winning Pennsylvania in November. Ryan started the day in Pittsburgh.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Faith in the Future Foundation signed an agreement today that will place the management of all the Archdiocese's secondary and special education schools in the hands of the recently incorporated foundation. The five year contract is first-of-its-kind and unprecedented in Catholic education in the country. The foundation will handle marketing, fundraising, enrollment, and educational initiatives for all 17 high schools and 4 special education schools beginning September 1st. Principals will still report to the Office of Catholic Education and teachers are still employees of the Archdiocese. Grade schools will continue to be managed by individual parishes.

Philadelphia police continued their crackdown on illegal ATVs and dirt bike with a weekend sweep in Southwest Philly that garnered 18 ATVs and nine dirt bikes. Combined with seizures made during the past two weekends, both uniformed and undercover officers confiscated a grand total of 95 ATVs and dirt bikes. However, many riders can get those vehicles right back by showing paperwork of ownership and paying fines and fees to the Parking Authority. Otherwise they head to auction, controversially because they are just sold back to those who will probably ride them illegally. Riders complain there are no 'legal' places to ride in the city, but significantly more complaints come from regular citizens who worry about the noise, damage, and dangers they cause on the street. Riders should take them to the countryside where they belong and police should do more than take them away from offenders and basically hand them back the next day.

Tonight, partly cloudy with temperatures in the 70's this evening in Philadelphia.
