Kensington Strangler Found Guilty/Sentenced Life, Valley Swim Club Discrimination Case Settled

The Justice Department has announced a settlement in the racial discrimination case against the former Valley Swim club in Huntingdon Valley dating back to June 2009. The suburban swim club allowed Creative Steps Day Camp of Northeast Philadelphia access to the pool for summer campers. After the first day, they refunded the camp's money and asked them not to return. The club claimed there were too many campers and they were too rowdy for lifeguards to handle. The campers claimed they heard members making racial comments about their presence. Valley Swim club filed for bankruptcy in November 2009 due to mounting legal bills and bad publicity.

Once the bankruptcy case is closed the $1.1 million settlement will be split among the 73 discrimination claimants who were denied access to the pool. A diversity leadership council will also be setup including members of Valley Swim Club and Creative Steps working together to create recreational and educational activities

The “Kensington Strangler” 23-year-old Antonio Rodriguez was found guilty today, convicted of raping and murdering three women, after a quick 2 ½ day non-jury trial. The young women's bodies were all found over a 6-week period in late 2010. The medical examiner said they were strangled in a similar manner and DNA evidence on all three were a match to Rodriguez. Judge Jeffrey Minehart ruled earlier this week that Rodriguez's confession to police would also be admissible during trial. After hearing from the victims families, the judge sentenced him to three consecutive life terms.
