Firefly Music Festival wrapping it up Day 3; The Black Keys, Flaming Lips, Cold War Kids

Today was Day 3 at the Firefly Music Festival and the sun finally made an appearance or two for Sunday, but didn't bear down on the crowds. It made for a very pleasant day in Dover, DE for concert goers whether they were weekend weary campers or day passers taking this all in for the time. The lines for the free Arcade were still long (especially the Skeeball) and if you wanted to design your own Toms shoes (after purchase of course) I think you had to get in line sometime Friday. The hot air balloon rides looked like they would have been fun too, maybe if they went higher. One of the most interesting areas that wasn't on the map, happened to be the pathway through the woods between the two main sections of the festival. The trees were decorated and lit up at night, it had a smell of fresh woodchips, and it was a great place to sit down and listen or watch what was going on. Here's some highlights from today's performances.

Cold War Kids drew a large crowd in the middle of the afternoon to the main stage. They played an excellent set, rocking their way through “Hang Me Out To Dry”, “Audience”, “Louder Than Ever”, and “Hospital Beds”. Fitz and the Tantrums brought their indie pop and motown/soul sound to the Lawn Stage, and the crowd was able to get down to “Moneygrabber” and “Don't Gotta Work It Out”. Death Cab for Cutie and Ben Gibbard spent no time getting started launching into the building “I Will Possess Your Heart.” The Seattle based band is playing the final show on their tour before flying home. They let it all out on the main stage also playing songs such as “You Are Tourist” and “Cath...”.

Wayne Coyne and company keep your eyes and ears filled with candy. Today's set featured a regular Flaming Lips setlist (not a Dark Side of the Rainbow mashup) but they still filled the stage with dancers dressed as sexy Dorthy, shaggy Lions, and the crew as Tinmen from the “Wizard of Oz” anyway. Add to that superfluous confetti and smoke cannons, extra large balloons, and giant blow up puppets and you don't know where to look, just watch out for Coyne to roll by on top of the crowd in his hamster ball.

On the other side of the festival, Pittsburgh native Girl Talk had the crowd going nuts with his mashup-remix style dj set on the Backyard stage.

The Black Keys were the headlining act for Sunday night and did not disappoint the massive crowd out to see them play. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney played most of their hits including “Howlin' for You”, “Tighten Up”, “Lonely Boy”, and “Gold on the Ceiling”.

All in all the entire festival was terrifically run, especially for the first time ever, no major hiccups or problems anywhere. They definitely expect to bring Firefly back next year. Of course it can only get better, though it might be hard to top how cool, laid back, and fun this music festival was. It was perfect for a midsummer concert experience here on the east coast. Looking forward to next year.
