Mayor Nutter Defends Feeding Ban, Kenneth Mazik Pleads Guilty, Freeh Report due Thurs. 9am

Mayor Nutter told a federal judge this morning that his ban on public feeding of homeless people in the city parks is part of his plan to end city homelessness. It is not a reaction to pressure from cultural groups along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The ban is being challenged on constitutional grounds from various religious groups who feed the homeless outside in city parks. They say it interferes with their free exercise of religion. Nutter says the outdoor feeding does not address the underlying problems of homeless people. The mayor believes that besides a meal or sandwich, the homeless should also be introduced to and have available other services. These would only be possible if done at indoor facilities which are also more “humane” especially in extreme weather conditions. Opponents to the ban who just want to do their service and hand out food where ever they are needed say that the city has shown little in providing those extra services so far.

A 24-year-old Chadds Ford, Pa. man has plead guilty to using his SUV to disrupt and endanger airport operations back on March 1st. Kenneth Mazik crashed his Jeep Cherokee through a locked airport gate, drove down the entire runway and back again. Numerous flights were stalled in the air and on the ground. He faces up to 20 years in prison, $91,000 in restitution and the potential that TSA could sue him civilly, seeking a fine or travel restrictions. Sentencing is in October.

School officials said today that the Freeh report on Penn State's child sex abuse scandal will be released at 9 a.m. Thursday. The report was drafted by an investigative panel led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh. It's long anticipated contents are expected to show the University's culpability in handling any allegations of misconduct against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. In particular, the actions of former Athletic Director Tim Curley, former university vice president in charge of police Gary Schultz, and former Pennsylvania State University President Graham B. Spanier and their handling or knowledge of 2001 allegations from then graduate assistant Mike McQueary will be scrutinized.
