Gunman Shot at City Hall, Heat Wave Among Philadelphia's Worst, Nutter Calls Teen Shooter "A-hole"

A man with a gun disrupted rush hour activity around City Hall this morning. The man was spotted holding a gun and was approached by police. During the standoff, street traffic was diverted and SEPTA trains did not stop at the 15th Street stop under City Hall. The man, in his 20’s, fired a shot at police. They returned fire, wounding the man and apprehended him. No police were hurt.

Is it hot enough for you? Not yet? Tomorrow will be even hotter reaching 103 degrees. This heat wave will continue through Monday and will go down as one of Philadelphia’s longest heat waves since record keeping started in 1847. Sunday the temperature will get into the 90’s for the 11th consecutive day. Please keep checking in on elderly friends and family.

Despite three teenagers being shot at the Philadelphia Welcome America concert on the Parkway July 4th, Mayor Nutter proclaimed the event an overwhelming success. In a damage control press conference yesterday, Mayor Nutter said, “I am not going to let some little asshole negatively impact the image of this city.” The Mayor and police are now planning another big Parkway concert – Jay Z and Pearl Jam Labor Day weekend.

Sports
The Phillies are home tonight against the Braves. Ryan Howard will play first base.

Weather
Excessive heat warning. Up to 96 in Philadelphia.
