Sunoco Refinery to Remain Open, Atlantic County Still Dark, Former CFO Guzzardi Pleads Guilty

The South Philly Sunoco refinery will remain open after a deal was struck between the Carlyle Group, a Washington, D.C., private equity manager, and Sunoco. The new joint venture will be called Philadelphia Energy Solutions. The refinery was set to close at the end of this month as Sunoco was going to pull out of the refining business altogether. Keeping the plant open will save 850 jobs on site as well as thousands more that it supports indirectly. Carlyle owns the majority interest and plans to reduce costs by using more domestic crude oil sources as well as increase use of Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale natural gas.

Atlantic County officials and residents have been exhibiting enormous amounts of patience since Saturday's early morning storms knocked out the power to many. 92,000 still are without power and Atlantic Electric officials are working hard to restore it as quickly as possible. They hope to have the majority of customers back up by Wednesday. Many people just head down the shore, since the coastal cities weren't as affected (no trees to crash lines), and its easy to keep cool when there's an ocean at your footstep. If you can't make it to the beach there are cooling centers set up at Brigantine Community Center, Alder Avenue School in Egg Harbor Township, and at the City Halls in Linwood and Estell Manor. Atlantic County has established a distribution point for ice and water at the Hamilton Mall along the Black Horse Pike in Mays Landing. You'll be able to get a 40-lb bag of ice and a case of water, one per car.

UPDATE at 11pm: 78,000 still without power.

Former Chief Financial Officer for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Anita Guzzardi, plead guilty Friday to charges of theft by deception, unlawful use of a computer and forgery. Guzzardi, 42, of Haddon Heights, NJ was accused of stealing more than $900,000 from the church using hundreds of church checks to pay personal credit card bills from 2005 to 2011. She has worked for the Archdiocese since 1989, but was only promoted to CFO near the time of her arrest. American Express had notified authorities of suspicious account behavior and an investigation then began. Guzzardi will be sentenced August 24th.
